An impact driver's rotational hammer blows are hard on screwdriver bits that weren't built for it — a standard bit that's fine in a drill can crack, strip, or snap off inside a screw head after a surprisingly small number of drives.

Impact-rated driver bits use tougher alloys and, on several of the sets below, a flex zone that absorbs some of that hammering instead of transferring all of it to the tip. These are different from drill bits, which are for boring holes rather than driving fasteners — if you need the latter, see our drill bit set roundup below.

How we picked: We prioritized sets that are explicitly impact-rated rather than general-purpose driver bits, with attention to tip hardness, flex-zone or shock-absorbing designs, and the mix of Phillips, square, and Torx/star tips that actually match common fasteners. This draws on published specs, brand reliability history, and long-term owner feedback rather than our own bench testing.

DEWALT IMPACT READY FlexTorq Screwdriving Bit Set

Runner-up

9.3/10Editor’s score

Best for preventing stripped screws

  • FlexTorq design flexes slightly under load instead of transferring the full impact straight to the tip
  • Noticeably reduces cam-out on long deck and framing screws
  • Wide size range for Phillips, square, and Torx fasteners

Watch out The flex zone is a real benefit for driving, but doesn't help if you're using the bit to back out stuck or damaged screws.

Milwaukee SHOCKWAVE 3-Inch Magnetic Impact Bit Holder (2-Pack)

Also great

8.4/10Editor’s score

Best accessory to make any bit last longer

  • Shock-absorbing zone in the holder itself reduces stress on whatever bit is loaded
  • Strong magnet keeps screws seated and reduces wobble that leads to stripping
  • Cheap insurance for the bits you already own, not just a new set

Watch out It's a holder, not a bit — pair it with an actual impact-rated bit set rather than treating it as a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between drill bits and impact driver bits?
Drill bits bore holes and come in twist, spade, masonry, and other material-specific styles. Driver bits are for driving screws (Phillips, square, Torx) and, for an impact driver specifically, need to be impact-rated to survive the rotational hammering without snapping or stripping.
Will a regular, non-impact-rated bit work in an impact driver?
Physically, yes, as long as it has a 1/4-inch hex shank. But standard bits aren't hardened for the hammering action and tend to strip or snap much sooner than an impact-rated bit under the same use.
What bit sizes do I actually need most often?
A Phillips #2 and a square #2 cover the majority of household screws, with Torx/star sizes increasingly common on deck screws and furniture hardware. A set that covers all three in a couple of sizes each handles nearly everything.
